A vast array of Japanese traditional hairstyles (nihongami) that fall under the category of unmarried women's hairstyles (shimada); all of which share the trait of vertically-tied bow-shaped hair fastened against the scalp.


Sometimes tied with a motoyui (shown in image below).

Variants

From left to right:

  • Tsubushi shimada (つぶし島田)
  • Taka shimada (高島田)
  • Nage shimada (投島田)

Other known styles:

  • Kyofu shimada (京風島田)
  • Yakko shimada (奴島田): Mid-Edo - early Meiji

A noteable feature of this style was the use of red cloth to tie the hair.
