Designed, developed and officially introduced in 1949. The red field is officially meant to symbolize communism, the big yellow star the Communist Party, and the four smaller stars meant the farmers, workers, intellectuals, and the bourgeoisie. Some people interpret the stars to be meant the five major ethnic groups of China, with the Han Chinese getting the large star and the four other stars meant to be Manchurians, Mongolians, Tibetans, and Uyghurs.

Not to be confused with the Republic of China flag (a.k.a. Taiwanese flag).
