Shinju refers to any suicide of two or more individuals who are "bound by love".
There was a belief stemming from Edo teachings that lovers who comitted double suicide would be united in the afterlife.
The word is formed from 心 (heart/mind) and 中 (center/inside). As such, its literal definition could be the "oneness of hearts".
