Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (Kidō Senshi Gandamu 0080 Poketto no Naka no Sensō) is a six episode 1989 Japanese science fiction and mecha original video animation series.
It is the first OVA series in the Gundam franchise and also the first main Gundam anime to feature a female Gundam pilot main protagonist. It was directed by Takayama Fumihiko, written by Yamaga Hiroyuki with character designs by Mikimoto Haruhiko.
As suggested by its subtitle, War in the Pocket, it is a small personal "coming of age" series; a serious side story focusing on the experiences of an idealistic and naive eleven-year-old_civilian_boy during the last part of the_One_Year_War and his learning of the real life meanings of friendship, love, war and death.
A crude, realistic and significant departure for the Gundam franchise at the time, Gundam 0080 has received wide acclaim from critics over time.
The realism in the series and its focus in side story regular soldier and civilian characters paved the way for other more serious Gundam works like Gundam 0083 and Gundam 08th MS Team.
